FAIRFIELD — Two brothers were recently awarded the Carnegie Medal for helping an individual who fell through the ice into freezing water on Lake Mohegan in December 2019, according to police.
The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced on March 24 that 18 individuals, including Jonathan L. Goldfarb and Matthew Goldfarb, would receive the Carnegie Medal, awarded throughout the U.S. and Canada to those who put themselves in mortal danger to save, or try to save, the lives of others.

Mrs Ann Iyonu, Executive Director, Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) announced this at a news conference in Yenagoa on Friday.

Iyonu said that the former leaders’ group christened West African Elders Forum (WAEF) was inaugurated by Jonathan at a virtual meeting held on Thursday.
She said that WAEF was an initiative of the GJF aimed at harnessing the goodwill, expertise and experiences of former leaders to promote peaceful elections and deepen democracy in West Africa.

School district's mental wellness program aimed at helping entire family

In wake of recent tragedies involving children in the Greater Cincinnati area, Mason School Superintendent Jonathan Cooper took to social media Friday to talk about the impact these events have on our communities."The tragic events that have happened here at Mason have impacted us all. A lot of times we search for answers -- 'Why did this happen?' and oftentimes, there are not answers, not easy answers, but there is support," Cooper said. A few years ago, the Mason School District invested in a mental wellness team."We have a whole mental wellness team that is working right alongside our counselors to provide the resources that families and students need," said Mason City Schools spokesperson Tracey Carson. The team includes nine school-based therapists from Children's Hospital and also therapy dogs. Members of the team are available to parents as well as students."Within our mental wellness team, we have folks that are there to help families connect to the resources they need," Carson said. "Reading and writing and math, those are all critical for childrens' development. So is their mental health, so we're going to be here to answer that call for families too." As we've seen in recent weeks, sometimes it's adults who may need help more than children."As we go into the weekend, think through, 'How do we support, not just your kids but your neighbors?' and look for ways to connect in that way," Cooper said. "Remember that we have each other and the power of the community is leaning on each other and supporting each other through these times."Many districts also have tip lines available for families.
